Alaa Abdel-Fattah, an activist, now detained in Egypt, wrote a letter to
his family on Tuesday informing them that he has broken his hunger strike.

The family said in a statement that Laila Soueif, Abdel-mother, Fattah’s
received a brief note written in her son’s handwriting from prison
officials. It is dated this coming Monday. In it, he invites her to join
him on Thursday for their regular visitation in jail.

The activist had earlier declared that if he wasn’t freed, he would be
