The Central government petitioned the Supreme Court for a review of its
November 11 ruling releasing six defendants in connection with the killing
of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on Thursday. The Centre complained to
the highest court because the order was made without them being present. On
Saturday, all six convicted assassins of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi
were released from various prisons in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu
(November 13). The Congress party has previously criticized the Supreme
Court’s decision as “absolutely inappropriate and completely erroneous.”
The communications chief for the Congress party, Jairam Ramesh, blasted the
decision as “wholly untenable” in a public statement.
