On Friday, White House officials claimed that the US government’s latest
court filing, in which they claimed that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin
Salman had protection from legal prosecution over the death of journalist
Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, has no bearing on the state of bilateral relations.
A civil lawsuit was filed against the crown prince and several Saudis by
Hatice Cengiz, Khashoggi’s girlfriend. “This legal determination has
absolutely nothing to do with the merits of the case itself,” said White
House national security spokesman John Kirby.
