In response to unprecedented public protests against President Xi Jinping’s
stringent zero-COVID policy, which has received strong support from the
United Nations, the United States, and other countries, China announced on
Tuesday that it will take steps to “minimize” the impact of its draconian
coronavirus lockdowns.
Despite a stepped-up crackdown by police, including visits to the homes of
demonstrators in various locations, no new rallies have been reported in
the last few days in numerous Chinese cities, including Shanghai and
Beijing, where protests turned political with calls for Xi to resign down.
