On Wednesday, Democrats in the House of Representatives elected Hakeem
Jeffries to succeed Nancy Pelosi as party leader, making him the first
person of African descent to hold such a position in the United States
Congress.
The 52-year-old, who has been a top Democrat since 2019, was chosen without
opposition in a secret ballot that also saw new people take the No. 2 and
No. 3 spots.
Because Jeffries is 30 years younger than Pelosi, the election of the New
York congressman represents a generational shift within the Democratic
Party.
