Dr. C. Somashekhara, chairman of the Karnataka Border Area Development
Authority (KBADA), said on Friday that a six-month-old initiative by a team
from the Maharashtra government offered incentives to establish additional
Marathi-medium schools within Karnataka’s Belagavi district.
After the KBADA voiced its objection, the campaign was put on hold due to
the legality of the organization’s actions.
Somashekhara, speaking at a press conference on a Friday, said, “A
delegation from Maharashtra had traveled to the border regions of Karnataka
and started a drive by making an offer of greater subsidies and better
facilities to those schools which teach education in Marathi.”
