This past Saturday, Bollywood actor and BJP politician Paresh Rawal was
arrested in Kolkata for his controversial “prepare fish for the Bengalis”
comment made during a voting rally in Gujarat. Based on a complaint made by
CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim, actor Paresh Rawal has been booked under
several sections of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly delivering “hate
speech” against the Bengali minority. On Tuesday, he spoke at a campaign
rally in the Valsad region of Gujarat, where he reportedly claimed, “The
cost of gas cylinders is high, but it will eventually decrease. And people
will find work, too. But what if, like in Delhi, Rohingya refugees and
Bangladeshis begin to settle in your neighborhood? I’m curious as to your
plans for the empty gas tanks. Assemble some fish for the Bengalis to eat?
“. The BJP leader faced backlash for his statements, so he took to Twitter
to apologize and clarify that when he said “Bengalis,” he meant “illegal
Bangladeshis.”
