By-elections for the prominent Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat and the Rampur and
Khatauli assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh will be held on Thursday
(December 8, 2022). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi
Party (SP), and its ally, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), are engaged in an
open political struggle in all three regions. In the Mainpuri by-election,
the seat was vacant after the death of Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam
Singh Yadav. In contrast, the chair was empty in the Rampur Sadar
by-election because prominent SP leader Azam Khan was disqualified. The
BJP’s Vikram Singh Saini was disqualified from the assembly in Khatauli
after he was found guilty and given a two-year prison sentence in a riots
case from 2013.
