New research analysing over 10 million ER visits in California finds that
people who seek treatment for an injury while intoxicated or with an
alcohol use disorder are five times more likely to die within the next year
than the general population.
Five out of every hundred inebriated or alcohol-abusing individuals who
sought medical attention at an emergency room died within a year, compared
to one death per hundred in the control group. Assistant Professor of
Public Health at the University of California, Merced Sidra Goldman-Mellor,
PhD, MPH, who led the study, calls that “a significant difference.”
