Sulochana Chavan, a famous Marathi Lavani singer, passed away on Saturday
in Mumbai from natural causes, her relatives reported. Chavan, who aged 92,
was honoured with the Padma Shri. Her son, Dholki player Vijay Chavan,
informed PTI that she passed away in her home in south Mumbai. Sulochana
Chavan was a legendary performer of traditional Maharashtrian music known
as Lavani, earning her the title “Lavani Samradnyi” (Queen of Lavani) for
her contributions to the field. Lavani is intimately related to the folk
theatre form Tamasha.
