masterpieces Scioscia (Shoeshine) and Bicycle Thieves, both of which
feature Sophia Loren, and the marvelous comedy anthology Yesterday, Today,
and Tomorrow. Aside from the top awards at Cannes and Berlin, De Sica has
won four Oscars during his career for directing. The iconic Major
Alessandro Rinaldi in Charles Vidor’s adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s A
Farewell to Arms earned him an Academy Award nomination for supporting
actor in 1958. He went on to star in more than 160 films.
