Surviving double blows – Amphan and Covid -, the Calcutta Sports Journalists’ Club (CSJC) on Wednesday threw open the club tent after renovation for a corporate look, which was unveiled by former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and West Bengal sports minister Aroop Biswas.
The Amphan ravaged club tent was refurbished and renovated by the active support of Banyan Tree Group owner Prabir Roy Chowdhury and Kolkata Thunderbolts’ owner Pawan Patoria, who also graced the occasion, which coincided with annual awards function ceremony.
The grand reopening of the club was followed by the club’s prestigious Annual Awards functions at the club lawn as the sportspersons of the year awards went to Commonwealth gold medal winning weightlifter Achinta Sheuli and Squash Player Saurav Ghosal,who won the Bronze. On behalf of Achinta, his elder brother accepted the award from Sourav Ganguly and minister Aroop Biswas. Achinta Sheuli won Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games, while Sourav Ghosal bagged two Bronze Medals (Men’s Singles and Mixed Doubles) at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games this year. Sourav remembered the days when he too was awarded the best cricketer award by the same club years back.
He congratulated all the award winners and said that sportspersons are the real heroes of the society as they had to fight it out on the ground to emerge on the top. Sports Minister Aroop Biswas lauded the club’s executive committee members for rebuilding the tent in quick time. Col Shyam Deo Vats (Col Land) of Bengal Sub Area Headquarters was also present. Best cyclist: Triyasha Paul. Best gymnast: Pranati Nayak. Best volleyball player: Umar Faruk Halder. Best shooter: Mehuli Ghosh. Best chess player: Mitrabha Guha
