This summer, I took a break from my job at ACCESS Health to intern for
World Information Transfer at the United Nations Economic and Social
Council (ECOSOC). I could attend the sixth Open-Ended Working Group on
Ageing meeting as part of my internship. Our goal in forming this committee
is to improve senior citizens’ access to human rights protections. Both the
panel and the member governments agree that action must be taken
immediately to address the issue of the world’s aging population. To
reevaluate the current international framework on the human rights of older
individuals, the working group engaged in a thorough discussion session
during session. To fill those voids, members of the group looked at the
global level. They also examined the position of human rights for the
elderly in the post-2015 development plan and current progress and
difficulties.
