bacteria from human excreta to fight dangerous gut infections with no side
effects.
Medical experts say a new treatment from Ceres Therapeutics could help
patients. After more than a decade of observation, this method can be said
to be an easy practice.
Risks from infections with Clostridium difficile bacteria, which cause
recurrent severe nausea, cramps, and diarrhea, can be easily controlled.
These capsules are used in people aged 18 years and above.
In cases where infections are high, mortality is also high. 15 to 30
thousand deaths are recorded annually. Overuse of antibiotics for treatment
also kills beneficial bacteria. They also destroy the good bacteria that
live in the intestines, making them more susceptible to future infections.
The new capsules are approved for patients who have already received
antibiotic treatment.
Doctors have made the capsules using stool from a healthy donor — with
a stool transplant — to restore the gut’s healthy balance and prevent
re-infections.
The FDA approved the first pharmaceutical-grade version of the treatment
last year from drugmaker Ferring Pharmaceuticals.
This treatment is sold under the brand name Vovst and results can
be obtained by taking it for three consecutive days.
