According to recent measurements by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) in the US, methane levels in the atmosphere have hit
1,900 parts per billion (ppb). In contrast, before the industrial
revolution, there was roughly 700 ppb.
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that lingers in the atmosphere for about
nine years. Since 1750, its contribution to global warming—including
spillover effects on other gases—has been around half that of CO2.
