Given the importance of technology in modern society, it shouldn’t be as
much of a surprise that we spend an increasing amount of time online. The
average adult checks their phone at least 150 times a day, and some spend
up to 19 hours a day glued to their screens. In 2020, more than 300 million
meetings took place using Zoom, up from just 10 million the year before. As
if Sundays weren’t already terrifying enough, most of us have experienced
the pang of guilt that comes with a weekend report of excessive screen use.

While the rise in technology has some obvious benefits, such as keeping
people in touch during a pandemic, it also has drawbacks. However, the
adverse effects of too much screen time on our bodies and minds must not be
ignored. Taking a digital detox can do wonders for our mental and physical
well-being, from enhancing our capacity to concentrate and sleep to
improving our skin’s appearance.
