On Monday, the British government criticized Chinese authorities after the
BBC reported that one of its journalists had been arrested and abused while
documenting Covid protests in Shanghai.
According to the UK broadcaster Ed Lawrence, an authorized journalist
working in China, he was detained for several hours and attacked and kicked
by police.
On Monday, after he was released, Lawrence took to Twitter to express
gratitude to his supporters and to speculate that “at least one local
national was imprisoned after trying to stop the police from hitting me.”
