target of an assassination plot orchestrated by “establishment elites” and
that his claims that nameless agencies were subverting democracy were

Khan gave a meandering address the day after he was shot at a political
rally outside Gujranwala, Punjab province, from a hospital bed in the city
of Lahore. The cricket star-turned-politician, injured in the attack and
confined to a wheelchair, blamed three high-ranking officials.
Dr. Faisal Sultan told reporters that the former Pakistani leader was shot
in the right leg and suffered a fracture. Sultan showed X-rays of Khan’s
broken right leg and bullet pieces buried in his thigh on both sides.
Khan has leveled accusations at Prime Minister Shabaz Sharif, Interior
Minister Rana Sanaullah, and Senior Intelligence Official Major General
Faisal, although he has provided no evidence to support his claims. CNN has
contacted the three men for comment.
On Thursday, PTI senior politician Asad Umar released a statement claiming
to have spoken with Khan, in which Khan made the initial accusation that
the three were behind the conspiracy. Sanaullah referred to Khan’s claims
as “grievous” in a televised address on Thursday.
