Shiite activists who are currently facing execution to use his visit, which
gets underway on Thursday, to demand an end to political persecution and
the death penalty in Bahrain. It’s unclear, though, whether Francis will
publicly humiliate his hosts during his four-day trip, which is the first
by a pope to the Persian Gulf island nation.
