Yair Lapid, the retiring prime minister of Israel, reiterated his country’s
severe condemnation on Tuesday of a rumored U.S. Department of Justice
inquiry into the murder of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the occupied
West Bank.

A representative for the Justice Department was silent. There were no
specifics regarding an investigation’s potential start date, scope, or
consequences. However, an FBI investigation into an ally’s actions would be
a rare, if not unprecedented, move, endangering the countries’ close ties
as Israel moves closer to electing its most right-wing leader in history.
