The United States Geological Survey said on Friday that a 6.9-magnitude
earthquake occurred off the coast of western Indonesia, although no damage
was reported right away.
The USGS reported that the magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred at a shallow
depth in Enggano, a small island roughly 155 kilometers (95 miles)
southwest of Sumatra’s Bengkulu.
At 9:07 p.m. (14:07 GMT), USGS reported another aftershock of magnitude 5.4
in the same region.
Spokesman for the national disaster mitigation agency Abdul Muhari told
AFP, “We have checked with authorities on Enggano island, the closest to
epicentre, and they reported the earthquake was felt weakly there, so far
there has been no reports on damages or casualties, but we are still doing
more assessment.”
