As of midnight on Friday, all hookah bars in Kolkata will be shut down by
the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). Although the KMC authorities will
issue a formal notification by Monday, all entities running hookah bars on
their premises have been asked to cease these facilities immediately, as
the total ban will be effective from Friday midnight, as stated by Kolkata
Mayor and state minister Firhad Hakim.
“A specialized license was required for businesses like bars, restaurants,
and hotels to set up hookah lounges within their establishments. The KMC
would no longer renew or grant any new special licenses under the former
