An ex-member of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) council filed
an appeal with the Bombay High Court on Monday, challenging the
constitutionality of an ordinance signed by the Eknath Shinde-led
Maharashtra government that reduced the number of councilors elected at
large from 236 to 227. Uddhav Thackeray’s Maha Vikas Aghadi government,
which took office in November 2021, expanded the city’s ward system from
227 to 236. In August, however, an ordinance enacted by the Shiv Sena-BJP
administration restored that number to 227. On Monday, former BMC
councilman Raju Pednekar, represented by attorney Joel Carlos, filed a
challenge to the August 2022 ordinance, arguing that it retroactively
rewound the clock.
